The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has formalised a significant partnership with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport of South Africa (CILTSA) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The signing, which took place on 19 August 2024 at the VUT Council Chambers, was done by Prof Khehla Ndlovu, VUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and Mr Elvin Harris, President of CILT South Africa. This crucial moment was also witnessed by Chief Teete Osuwu-Nortey, Global President of the CILT International, who is currently on an official visit to South Africa.
Primarily, the MoU aims to confirm the collaboration between VUT and CILT, which is expected to result in a number of interdisciplinary projects undertaken over the next few years. Accordingly, this collaboration has been described as a potential game changer that is poised to enhance the academic and professional landscape of logistics and transport in South Africa, positioning VUT as a key player in this critical industry.
Also, through this partnership, VUT staff and students in logistics and supply chain management will have access to CILTSA’s internationally recognised professional certifications, providing them with a competitive edge in the job market. Additionally, the collaboration will also encourage joint research initiatives between VUT and CILTSA. These projects will address current challenges and innovations within the logistics and transport sectors, contributing to the body of knowledge and practice in these fields.
In his opening address, Prof Chengedzai Mafini, the acting Deputy-Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at VUT, highlighted that the MoU signing merely formalises the long-existing relationship between VUT and CILTSA. He mentioned that other areas to be explored for collaboration include capacity building and training, which are crucial in a field that is rapidly evolving due to technological advancements and global economic shifts. “The partnership will also create pathways for VUT students to gain practical experience through internships and placements within CILTSA-affiliated companies. Notably, with the help of CILTSA’s industry linkages, ISUZU will soon welcome VUT students to an internship program to give them hands-on experience that will allow them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.”
Prof Mafini also reminded those in attendance that in April this year at VUT’s Autumn Graduations, CILTSA President, Mr Harris, not only lent the university his presence during the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Management Sciences but also sponsored the Top Achieving Student of Diploma in Logistics. Mr Harris also extended free membership to the winner, welcoming them into the field of young professionals, and further offered the Top 3 performing students a complimentary year-long mentorship program, ensuring their continued growth and success in the field.
Prior to signing on the dotted lines, Prof Ndlovu said the MoU marks a significant step forward for VUT in aligning its academic offerings with the needs of the industry. He added that the university strives to produce graduates that meet industry requirements, emphasising that VUT cannot achieve that without partnerships with industry and professional bodies such as CILTSA. He also called on CILTSA to avail itself of the opportunity to serve on the Faculty Advisory Board whenever called upon by the university to do so, adding that it would be of great benefit to curriculum development and enhancement. “To a great extent possible, may this partnership facilitate the integration of industry-relevant skills and knowledge into VUT’s logistics and transport courses. This alignment with CILT standards ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the global market,” Prof Ndlovu said.
CILTSA President, Mr Harris also highlighted the importance of this partnership, saying, “Our collaboration with VUT will help bridge the gap between academia and industry. By working together, we can ensure that the next generation of logistics and transport professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive the industry forward.”
These sentiments were also shared by the President of CILT International, Chief Osuwu-Nortey who said their organisation offers its members and graduates the opportunity to not only gain an internationally recognised qualification, but also achieve a portable designation that elevates their standing in the logistics and transport industries. “Our designations are recognised in the over 40 countries in which CILT operates, and are a differentiator for transport, logistics and supply chain professionals as the drive to professionalise our industry intensifies.”
Moving ahead, this MOU is expected to have a far-reaching impact on both VUT and the broader logistics and transport industry in South Africa. The alignment of academic programs with industry standards will not only benefit students but also contribute to the growth and development of the sector as a whole. The signing of this MOU is a testament to the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in addressing the challenges of today and preparing for the opportunities of tomorrow.
Later in the day, Chief Osuwu-Nortey who is the First African President of the Institute since its establishment in 1919, addressed students drawn from the Department of Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Chief Teete has been a member of CILT Ghana for nearly 30 years, and has held various positions including, International Vice President representing Africa and Chair of the Africa Forum, International Ambassador and until his appointment as the International President Elect, he was a Special Advisor on the Council of Trustees.
In his talk, he urged the students to deeply explore their identities and passions, encouraging them to become innovators rather than mere followers. “Be originators, not imitators,” he said, inspiring them to seek out opportunities where they can improve existing ideas and carve out their own paths in the industry. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of intentionality in their academic and professional pursuits. He stressed that in today’s competitive landscape, it is not just about who you know, but more importantly, who knows you and the unique value you bring to the table. His message was clear: success is driven by a combination of self-awareness, passion, and a commitment to excellence.
