On Friday, 22 November 2024, Vaal University of Technology (VUT) distinguished itself at the prestigious Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Awards, held at the Birchwood Hotel.
The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Dr Simphiwe Nelana, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Commercialisation, and Internationalisation (RICI), who was honoured with the prestigious EDHE Rising Star DVC of the Year Award.
Adding to this success, VUT’s Economic Activation Office also received accolades. Special mention was made of the Community of Practice (CoP) team, led by Economic Activation Officer Mrs Onica Matsheke, alongside Coordinators Mimi Tsosane and Matshepo Rathebe, who were awarded certificates of recognition for their exceptional contributions.
Entrepreneurship is a cornerstone of VUT’s mission to drive economic growth and development. The university remains steadfast in fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among its students, staff, and alumni. Through the initiatives and programmes led by the Economic Activation Office, VUT actively promotes innovation and job creation as part of its commitment to making a meaningful impact.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Nelana shared his heartfelt gratitude: “I am truly humbled and honoured to receive the Rising Star DVC Award from EDHE. It is an incredible privilege to be recognised for my contribution to the advancement of entreprenership in the higher education sector. This award is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of the hard work and dedication of my team and colleagues. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the higher education sector and look forward to striving for continued excellence in my role. Thank you to EDHE for this prestigious honour.”
