Two dedicated accounting lecturers, Mr. Letshaba Sejake and Mr. Lungisani Buthelezi from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently held an impactful post-matric information session for matric learners at a local school, Lebohang Secondary.

Held at the school’s premises in the neighbouring Tshirela township, the event sought to equip the learners with crucial knowledge and motivation needed as they prepare to transition from high school to higher education and life after matric. Recognising the importance of fostering academic success and youth development, the two shared critical insights into the world of higher education, covering a range of topics designed to prepare the learners for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

In a packed school hall buzzing with excitement, the session was kicked off with a motivational talk from Mr. Sejake. Drawing from Nelson Mandela’s famous words: “”Education is the most powerful tool you can use to change the world”, he reminded the audience about the importance of education. This was not just a recitation of a well-known quote from a prominent figure, but a passionate call to action. “Education is not just a means to an end but a transformative tool that can shape their futures and contribute to society,” said Sejake who encouraged learners to pursue their dreams relentlessly and to see higher education as a key stepping stone toward achieving their goals.

Mr. Buthelezi immediately took the stage to provide practical guidance on the next steps the learners should take as they approach the end of their Matric year. His presentation was a comprehensive roadmap to navigating the process of applying to institutions of higher learning, emphasizing the importance of meeting closing dates, gathering necessary documents, and ensuring that all forms are completed accurately.

One of the critical aspects of Mr. Buthelezi’s presentation was his detailed explanation of how to calculate the Admission Point Score (APS), a key metric in university admissions. He broke down the calculation process, making it accessible and understandable which empowered the learners to take charge of their academic assessments.

Moreover, Mr. Buthelezi provided invaluable insights into selecting the right course. He advised the learners to consider their interests, strengths, and career aspirations when choosing a field of study. However, his advice did not stop at personal preferences; he also stressed the importance of aligning their choices with the demands of the current job market. Sharing statistics from CareerJunction, he highlighted the careers that are in high demand, encouraging the learners to consider the long-term viability of their career choices.

Also notably, understanding the common concern of financial barriers, Buthelezi also touched on available financial aid options, including scholarships, bursaries, and student loans. He also emphasized the importance of early preparation and research in securing funding for tertiary education.

At the end, learners left the hall armed with knowledge, motivation, and a clearer sense of direction for the future. The visit served as a reminder of the power of education and the importance of guidance in shaping the future of young minds. VUT’s commitment to empowering the next generation was on full display, leaving a lasting impression on the learners of Lebohang Secondary School.
