Department of Electrical Engineering

Humanity’s appetite for continuous improvement of quality of life through technology has reached unprecedented levels with the emergence of the AI. Since electricity is the most versatile form of energy, most technologies use electrical energy in various forms of frequencies ranging from greater than GHz to zero frequency. Electrical engineering is all about using electrons as energy carriers for various technological manipulations. Electrical engineering therefore, has become one of the most important engineering disciplines in the modern era.

The Electrical Engineering Department at VUT offers world-class quality academic programmes for the benefit of the industry, community and students in the country and beyond in the Global South.  The undergraduate and post-graduate programmes equip students with essential knowledge and skills to serve as engineering professionals in different disciplines such as Computer Systems Engineering, Process Control Engineering, Power Engineering, and Electronic Engineering. The department ensures that the offered curricula are continuously reviewed, keeping pace with and enabling technological advancements dictated by the fourth industrial revolution. In that regard, the department boasts state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories that are among the best in the country. Some images of the laboratories are as presented below.

Electrical engineering is a broad field that encompasses various sub-disciplines, each focusing on different aspects of electrical systems and technology. Electrical engineering incorporates various disciplines and applications, from power systems and electronics to computer hardware and process control, aiming to advance technology and address societal needs. Here’s an overview of what each sub-discipline entails:

Computer Engineering: Computer engineering involves designing, developing, and maintaining computer hardware and software systems. It combines electrical engineering and computer science principles to create innovative computing solutions. Computer engineers work on various technologies, including microprocessors, embedded systems, digital circuits, and computer networks.

Electronic Engineering: Electronic engineering designs, develops, and manufactures electronic devices and systems. It deals with components such as semiconductors, diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits, as well as electronic circuits and systems. Electronic engineers work on diverse applications, including telecommunications, consumer electronics, medical devices, and automotive electronics.

Power Engineering: Power engineering deals with generating, transmitting, distributing, and utilisation of electrical power. It involves designing, operating, and maintaining power systems such as power plants, substations, transformers, and distribution networks. Power engineers optimise electrical power systems’ efficiency, reliability, and safety.

Process Control Engineering: Process control engineering involves designing and implementing control systems to monitor and regulate industrial processes. It applies principles of control theory, instrumentation, and automation to ensure complex systems’ efficient and reliable operation. Process control engineers work in various industries, including manufacturing, chemical processing, oil and gas, and power generation.
